Miss Alta Marie Perkins peacefully joined her Savior, Jesus Christ in her Heavenly home, on February 26, 2015, at her residence; Cumberland Village Nursing Home, LaFollette, TN.
Alta was born on May 22, 1921, to Walter and Mayme (Ivey) Perkins in the community of Davis Chapel, LaFollette, TN. She attended school in Davis Chapel and later worked to help restore the old School building which she loved. Alta also attended LaFollette High School and Moore’s Beauty College, LaFollette, TN. Alta was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in LaFollette where she attended and worked until her health began to fail. She also helped found and was a charter member of Indiana Avenue Baptist Church in LaFollette for over 50 years. Alta was extremely active in both churches over the span of 60 years. She taught the young girl’s Sunday School class and later the Older Women’s Class, worked in Bible Schools, singing schools, was Sunday School Superintendent, and held other positions when her church called on her to help. Alta also sang with a quartet for many years; played the piano and lead the choir. She loved the Lord and was a shining example of a Godly Christian woman to all who knew her. She worked tirelessly for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Alta was employed at LaFollette Shirt Company as a Supervisor and later owned her own business, Central Beauty Shop for a total of over 65 years. She was a skilled, respectable hairdresser and loved her clients. Alta loved to recite poetry from memory, an attribute to her mother. She also wrote many wonderful poems and stories and would entertain anyone who would listen! Alta was an avid reader and loved working the Word Jumble and Crossword in the daily paper. She faithfully visited the sick at the local nursing homes, loved to cook especially for her family. She gave of herself continually to all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mayme Perkins; brothers, Charles Perkins and wife Thelma; James Perkins and wife Edith; Walters Perkins, Jr. and wife, Frankie. Sisters; Gladys Swafford and husband Greely; Della Gaylor and husband Howard; Lena McKinney and husband, Millard; and brother in law Billy D. Hutson.
She is survived by sister Joyce Hutson of Jacksboro; several nieces and nephews whom she loved and adored and lots of friends.
The celebration of her life will be Saturday at 4 P.M. at Walters Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gene Roberts, Rev. Lee Hutson, and Rev. David Shepherd officiating with interment to follow at Sunrise Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4 P.M. Saturday before services.
